The museum is housed in a former tobacco growers Consortium, near the railway station of San Giustino.
The warehouse, now home to the museum, was built in the late nineteenth century by the town of San Giustino. The structure was expanded in subsequent years and remains in operation until 1992, when the tobacco was transferred into new warehouses in the industrial area. The museum, unique in its kind, and the structure that houses are of considerable historical interest because they document the stages of growing and processing tobacco and the importance it had in the economy of the territory. First in Italy entirely dedicated to tobacco, the museum was created by the will of a foundation established in 1997 by all the actors in the chain, from farmers to tobacconists. The museum examines the legislation and rebuilds and various processing steps, distinguishing between the agricultural (farming), the premanifatturiera (the selection and treatment of the leaves) and manufacturing (the production of various products: tobacco, snuff, to cigars, cigarettes).
The Foundation also sees the involvement of municipalities of the Valley of the Tiber, where the tobacco was imported into Italy for the first time at the end of the sixteenth century, within the territory included in the former Republic of Cospaia (1441 - 1826).
